Last Year Ever Review

December 31, 2012

Often, we carry over goals and ideas into a fresh new year out of guilt or a feeling of failure. We review all of the things we didn't do this year, we shake our heads and ask ourselves "what is wrong with me?" and we promise ourselves we will do better next year.

I am here to present the idea that doing that...

...shockingly...

...won't work.

You will most likely be beating yourself up again next year.

Intead, let's try something new.

Like I have been saying all year, let's pretend that this truly is The Last Year Ever. Imagine the world will indeed end come Friday. Embrace this idea, just for a moment.

With that idea in mind, look back at your life for a moment and ask:

What wonderful things would never have happened if I hadn't been born?

Cliche? Maybe. But it is extraordinary if you really get into it.

Did you rescue a dog and give him/her a wonderful life?

Did you ever truly touch someone with a thoughtful gift?

Have you ever loved someone that didn't feel like they were lovable?

Have you ever given money or donated time to someone else in need?

Think about your job - who has looked you in the eye and given you a meaningful "thank you"?

Has anyone ever told you that you made their day?

Has anyone every told you "that's one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me!"?

Have  you started a business, a family, or a friendship that made even ONE person's life better?

Do you have an idea yet of how you have made an impact?

Now imagine you weren't here to do those things, to say those things, to touch those lives. Yes, maybe someone else would pick up your slack. Maybe... or maybe not. Sit for a minute in the knowledge that you have made a difference, just by being you.

Look back on your life, and take a moment to feel peace in the idea that if the world did indeed end on Friday, you have done enough. Imagine you have no more time, and simply be grateful that you had the time you had to do the amazing things you have done.

With THAT energy, we will move into 2013 together. We will create more wonderful impact and meaning. No regret, no obligation, no guilt.

If the world ended on Friday, you have done enough. You are enough.

And I dig you.

Is flawless your goal?

July 23, 2011
Ok, great story - My brother went to a Marriage-strengthening-type weekend. One of the take-aways that I loved was one of the marriage therapists presenting talked about a man who came in complaining about his wife. He told him to write down all of her flaws on one side of the paper. After he was done, the therapist said "OK, now on the other side, write down what flaws you would like to replace those flaws with".

The man stared blankly. "No, you don't understand. I want to get rid of these f...
